Western division sizzles in round one of the regular season as they now have the chance relax under the sunny California sun this weekend at AFT-HES North Wing League's first annual western coaches conference in Las Angeles.
Coach Rachel commented as she rushed out the door, "I'm leaving Friday for LA to be able to compare notes with Coach Plunkett of the Pack (#3 in the league). How fortunate that we are playing each other this weekend! He's in for a beating!"
"Shouldn't that be 'unfortunate' that they are playing each other?" Responded Coach Wagner who was UNFORTUNATE not to be able to attend the conference.
It is really too bad that Coach Wagner could not attend. Looking at his standing in the league, he could have used the opportunity to compare notes with two of the top coaches. The Roughers succumbed to Glenn's Gorillas in week 4 and again in week five to Rebel Rousers. In both games Coach Wagner's team only lost by a couple of points.
"I really saw victory in week 4 and 5." Stated Coach Wagner, "I had made some much needed changes to my team, which I was hoping for the same comeback the Roughers saw last year."
The changes to the Roughers that Coach Wagner mentions is finally dropping Trent Dilfer and acquiring Vinnie Testeverde and Leon Johnson of the Jets. However, the Roughers biggest plays did not come from these guys, but his 1998 draft pick Emmett Smith and longtime Roughers McCaffery (Den) and Vinitieri (NE).
"I had a question mark by Emmett ever since Coach Robertson suggested him during the draft, but he has actually gotten in there and scored." Commented Coach Wagner, "I am not sure if it is because his contract is coming due or because Aikman is out and Garrett likes to use him more often."
Fun Quiz: Coach Wagner is at the bottom of the AFT-HES North Wing League, but he did actually win one game with 3X the points of this Coach. What coach lost to the Roughers?
The Roughers have a tough game this weekend against the #2 of the league Coach Johnson. Coach Johnson's No-Shows were showing SOME good in round one until the Pack stopped them in their tracks. Coach Johnson responded by clobbering Glenn's Gorillas 31-12. This is almost, but not quite, as big as the upset of the Roughers and our mystery team from in East (HINT) in round one.
Coach Muske of Glenn's Gorillas is not letting his loss to the No-shows get him down though. He is still has feeling of euphoria from beating the Pack, #3 in the league, and the Reddog Roughers, Bringing up the rear in round one. Is this good or bad?
"It's just GOOD coaching!" commented Coach Muske.
"Is it good coaching?" Responded Coach Wagner, "The Gorillas only squeezed by us by 4 points and kept it from being a tie game by a field goal. Our kicker has since scored 12 points last game and is ready to kick Butt! I won't lose to them again! Mark my words!"
I hope Coach Muske can keep that euphoria flowing coming into week 6. Glenn's Gorillas have a shot of showing up the Papa's who have consistently been one step behind the Gorillas in the League standings unless, of course, Coach Robertson of the Papa's and his 'man', Stewart, can pull another 57 points out of his . . . Uh . . . HAT.
"Coach Robertson keeps speaking of Stewart as the 'man', but what do we call the rest of his team?" Responded Coach Muske, "The Papa's can score, but they have NO DEFENSE!"
The Papa's have had their ups and downs in round one, but their coach, Lance Robertson, has kept consistently playing the same people. It wasn't until late in the first round that Coach Robertson decided to change. Ever since he changed his kicker from Hollis (Jack) to Hanson (Det), the Papa's have been on a slow comeback.
"I think Papa's need to drop the 'man' and start shopping around for anew quarterback." Commented Coach Wagner to repay Coach Robertson for his advice about Emmett Smith's comeback.
Rankings:
Rebel Rousers - UNDEFEATED!
No-Shows - Hanging on by a thread with the Pack snappin' back!
Plunk's Pack - In the words of our Commisioner, "So now you know!"
Glenn's Gorillas - Good Coaching & Talking about NO DEFENSE!
Papa's - At least he isn't Last!
Reddog Roughers - Lost and Forgotten (Commish left me off the Week 5 Standings)
